KREUZ | VDP.GROSSE LAGE

100 - 140 m elevation, 30% gradient, loess, shell limestone, 9 classified hectares

Our Oppenheimer Kreuz parcel is situated at an elevation of 100 to 140 metres in the historic heart of the vineyard site. Here, the soils are defined by limestone interspersed with fragments of coarse limestone and shell limestone. Kreuz stands as a testament to the foresight with which Carolin’s father, Roland, began shaping the estate’s Pinot Noir programme. Inspired by his experiences in Burgundy, he grafted old Kerner vines on the limestone-rich soils of Kreuz with Pinot Noir clones from Burgundy in the mid-1990s, at a time when few believed in the importance of origin or the future potential of German Pinot Noir.

With a well-defined structure, Kreuz combines finesse and lightness while remaining firmly rooted in the distinctive character of its site. The vineyard most likely takes its name from a tall sandstone cross that stands at the foot of the slope.
